How you can help save a mechanic
1) Let anyone you know who works on automobiles or who has loved ones who work with automobiles to visit our site and use the links on our main page to learn the best practices for working with asbestos brake pads. Let them know 1 in 6 after-market brake pads in Canada contains asbestos and they need to protect themselves. Asbestos is responsible for between 500 and 1,000 Canadian deaths each year.
2) Write to Minister of Health Rona Ambrose and ask her to support legislation to protect automotive workers and backyard mechanics. You can use our template below to copy and paste an e-mail or you can send letters via Canada Post to the address below.
The Honourable Rona Ambrose, P.C., M.P.

3) Write your local MP or MPP and ask them to support a law to ban asbestos in brake pads.
Subject: An Act to Protect Automotive Workers and Backyard Mechanics
The Honourable Rona Ambrose, P.C., M.P.,
I am writing to ask for your help to pass an act to protect automotive workers in Canada. Each year, more than 4,300 automotive workers are exposed to asbestos, usually found in brake pads and linings. Last year alone, more than $3.6 million dollars worth of brake pads and lining containing asbestos was imported into Canada, representing hundreds of thousands of brake pads.
We know that brake pads wear down and release asbestos over time. Industry knows this too, which is why Marc Brazeau, President and CEO of the Automotive Industries Association of Canada has stated that industry would support a phased-in ban.
Not only would legislation protect Canadian automotive workers and backyard mechanics but it would also provide a level playing field for innovative companies like Guelph based ABS Friction which has been producing asbestos-free brake pads since 1995.
We have a great opportunity to pass an act supported by industry, health professionals and the general public. I would welcome the opportunity to stand with you to announce your government is acting to protect automotive workers across the country.
I look forward to hearing from you on this important matter.
